Partnership Start-up Checklist

  • Enroll in a MaeWeather Scholarly Institute advanced or intermediate course
  • Complete the mandatory IRS Voluntary Annual Filing Season Program
  • Register with the IRS as a Tax Preparer; Get your Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN)

  • Apply for IRS Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) so you can e-file tax returns. Before you can electronically file tax returns, you must apply to become an Authorized e-file provider with the IRS.
› Step 1. Create an IRS e-services Account.
Before you can submit an e-file application you must register for an IRS e-services account directly with the IRS. It may take several days for the IRS to verify our identity and approve your request; plan and allow ample time to ensure successful enrollment.
› Step 2. Submit Your Application

Submit your application to Become an Authorized IRS e-file provider once essential person(s) are approved for e-services, you can begin the application process to become an authorized e-file provider.

The application process is rather complex, and because the application is so comprehensive, it is designed so that you can save your data, close out and return to it when convenient. It can take up to 45 days for the IRS to approve an e-file application.

› Step 3. Pass the Suitability Check

After you submit your application and related documents, the IRS will conduct a suitability check on you as either a principal or responsible official. This may include: a credit check; a tax compliance check; a criminal background check; and a check for prior non-compliance with IRS e-file requirements. Once approved, you will get an acceptance letter from the IRS with your Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN).
